Jomarie Azura and Janelle Pangilinan Dominate the Tan Holdings Badminton Open 2024

JOMARIE Azura and Janelle Pangilinan showcased dominant performances in the open division of the Tan Holdings Badminton Open 2024 as they each went home with two titles after the conclusion of the three-day event held from Friday to Sunday at the Ada gym.

Azura’s first title win was in the Men’s Open Singles where he defeated Lance Gallardo in two sets.

Azura cleared Bracket 2 unscathed as he recorded four wins, including a victory over Daniel Pablo, to reach the finals while Gallardo had the same outcome in Bracket 1 with four victories, including a win over Kyle Salcedo to set up the title match.

In the finals, Azura smashed his way to the Men’s Open Singles championship with agility and powerful returns, leaving Gallardo in the dust, 21-13, 21-12.

Finishing third was Daniel Mar Pablo who defeated Kyle Salcedo in a three-set thriller, 18-21, 21-11, 21-17.

There were 18 entries in the Men’s Open Singles.

In the Men’s Open Doubles event, Azura paired with Jordan Pangilinan to win the title.

The pair went head-to-head against Nate Guerrero and Ezekiel Macario in the final round.

In the first set, the teamwork of Azura and Pangilinan blended well with their footwork and aggressiveness to win by a comfortable distance, 21-15.

Guerrero and Macario adjusted accordingly in the second set to triumph, 21-17, and force a third and final set.

Guerrero and Macario gradually lost their touch, which allowed Azura and Pangilinan to reignite their momentum and finish strong, 21-14, to claim the Men’s Open Doubles title.

Pangilinan and Azura ruled Bracket 2 and had three wins, including a semifinal victory over Dave Odicta and Marlon Bautista. For their part, Guerrero and Macario topped Bracket 1 with three victories, including a win over Ferdie Arago and Dez Antonio.

Twelve pairs saw action in the Men’s Open Doubles.

Women’s

The tournament’s other big winner was Janelle Pangilinan.

She and Prapti Mondal secured the Women’s Open Doubles title.

They were sent to the losers bracket early in the double-elimination event, but they worked their way back to the top after eliminating Trizian Canoza and Shemariah Hicaro to set up a title match against the undefeated duo of Genelyn Lansangan and Jen Cardinio, who had to be beaten twice.

Lansangan and Cardinio lost to Pangilinan and Mondal 12-21, 21-20, 12-2

Then, in the winner-take-all game, Pangilinan and Mondal edged the favored Lansangan and Cardinio,15-14, to win the Women’s Open Doubles title.

Hicaro and Canoza, who lost their semifinal match to Pangilinan and Cardinio in the losers bracket, finished third.

Seven pairs competed in the Women’s Open Doubles.

Mixed

In the Mixed Open Doubles event, Pangilinan paired with Nate Guerrero to claim her second title.

The duo outplayed Ferdie Arago and Trizian Canoza in two sets, 21-16, 21-11, in the final round to win the championship.

Pangilinan and Nate Guerrero reached the finals after topping Bracket 1 and defeating Lance Gallardo and Monique Mascarinas in the semis. For their part, Arago and Canoza ruled Bracket 2 and advanced to the finals after beating Daniel Macario and Jen Cardinio.

Gallardo and Mascarinas defeated Macario and Cardinio, 21-16, 18-21, 21-18, to finish third.

Thirteen teams participated in the Mixed Doubles Event.
