Jannik Sinner’s debut in Miami: “I played carefully”

It’s the Masters 1000 of his first great exploit on the tour; here he reached the first final of his career at this level (2021 edition, beaten by his friend Hurkacz, ed.) and here, 12 months ago, with another final, he laid the foundations for his dream year. From Miami…. a Miami.

Jannik Sinner he returned to the fields of the Hard Rock Stadium with a different status… as the number 2 seed, with a Slam title, legitimate ambitions and great awareness. After the knockout in the semi-final of Indian Wells, at the hands of Carlos Alcaraz, Jan found success again… yet another in a derby of his pro career: “For a first match of the tournament it went well – he explains in the conference press after the match with Andrea Vavassori – . Yesterday we knew that there was a risk of not finishing the match, I was mentally prepared. But the day was long, then when they gave us the OK to leave I didn’t think about tennis anymore. It’s important not to always think about it. Today I was very careful, I did what needed to be done and I felt better than yesterday. It was a very positive performance, I can be happy.”

“Here it is difficult to play the first rounds – he added -, coming from Indian Wells the conditions are decidedly different. Today in a few hours we had rain, sun, then there was a lot of humidity. Obviously we are prepared, but the body needs time to adapt. On the other hand, I really like the pitch because it is faster.”

As the years went by, Sinner understood the importance of ‘switching off’ between one match and another, between one tournament and another: “I eat with my team, we go for nice walks and as soon as I arrive in Miami I I took the opportunity to go to the beach, something I had never done in the past – he says -. I try to do new things and I like it, obviously the performance on the pitch is the main thing, that’s what I’m here for. We play tennis every day so sometimes doing different things related to sport is good.”

In the third round he will meet the Dutchman Griekspoor, whom he has already faced and beaten on three occasions, but always in indoor conditions: “It will be the first time outdoors – the blue player analyzes the 3rd round match –; the ball bounces more, I will have to be careful because he plays well and serves equally well. He is an aggressive player and knows how to do everything very well. I’ll have to be careful, but I like these challenges…. it’s the matches that show me where I’m at.”
