Jadon Sancho’s Rising Form: Borussia Dortmund Plans to Extend Loan

Just in time for the Champions League second leg against PSV Eindhoven, Jadon Sancho’s form is pointing upwards. Borussia Dortmund apparently plans to sign the Englishman beyond the season.

Jadon Sancho brings back memories of earlier times.

On Saturday evening, the 23-year-old scored his first goal since his return to Borussia Dortmund – and in the most beautiful way. He easily beat his opponent Julian Malatini from Werder Bremen on the outside, moved towards the goal and hit the ball flat into the near corner.

For those responsible at BVB, this was a step in the right direction. “He rewarded himself today,” said sports director Sebastian Kehl. “He has repeatedly had his opportunities recently, but the final step was missing. Now in this one action you have seen once again what a great footballer he is, who can make the difference, especially in one-on-one situations. “

Sancho’s loan to BVB has been running since January and is only valid until the end of the season. At Manchester United, where he had not made a single appearance for four and a half months, he is still on duty until the summer of 2026.

the essentials in brief

However, he is unlikely to play a role there in the future as long as Erik ten Hag is the team’s coach. The relationship between Sancho and the Dutchman is considered very tense.

It is therefore quite possible that Sancho will also play for Dortmund next season. According to a report in “Bild”, Borussia has the plan to loan the winger for another season or to account for him in a possible transfer (e.g. from Donyell Malen) in the summer.

Sancho was “very dissatisfied in the last week”

Before the game against Bremen, Sancho had not scored in eight competitive games and had only prepared two goals. These two templates occurred in January, so they were a long time ago. “I’ve gotten a lot of questions in the last few weeks about why he’s not there yet. For us, that’s completely logical considering what his last twelve months looked like,” said coach Edin Terzic when asked ran. “Nevertheless, he was very dissatisfied last week. So we had a long conversation.”

The coach appealed to the offensive player’s qualities: “Jadon is a player who is not known for having a very hard or precise shot. But he has a very early shot. He shoots very often before everyone else sees it – before the opponent sees it, before the goalkeeper sees it. We wanted to remember that so that he gets into these situations. That worked well. He already scored a lot of goals in training during the week to prepare for today’s game.”

Despite his goal against Bremen, Sancho was critical of his own performance, as Terzic revealed: “He was very dissatisfied after the game. He said himself that there were too many unnecessary ball losses on his part, especially in the second half. What I like about him is, that he doesn’t just focus on his goal, but rather perceives the entire performance.”

Nevertheless, his first goal in the 2024 calendar year should give him a boost. Kehl said about Sancho’s form: “He has repeatedly had his opportunities recently, but the last step was missing. Now in this one action you have seen once again what a great footballer he is, especially in one-on-one situations. One-on-one situations can make the difference.”

Teammate Niclas Füllkrug can well understand that Sancho struggled in the first few weeks. “With Jadon, they brought back an incredibly talented player, but he had a very difficult time at Manchester United for six months and didn’t get much playing time. Accordingly, you can still give him one or two details that don’t work optimally. Today he has one “We scored a very important goal with really good action. It brings us forward when Jadon solves the situation for us like that.”

BVB meets PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday

Kehl believes that Sancho is far from having exhausted his potential: “He’s not at 100 percent yet. But he’s taken a step forward week after week.” Undoubtedly he has the quality to make the difference. “We need him. We need him on Wednesday and in the next few weeks,” said Kehl.

A Sancho who plays again like in earlier times would definitely be good for Dortmund in the Champions League quarter-final second leg on Wednesday (9 p.m., in the live ticker on ran.de) against PSV Eindhoven.
