Italy successful in friendly against Venezuela

Two goals from Genoa striker Mateo Retegui gave European champions Italy a 2-1 win over Venezuela in a friendly in Fort Lauderdale. The “Squadra Azzurra” is playing two test matches in the USA as part of its preparations for the 2024 European Championship. Another friendly match against Ecuador will take place on Sunday at the Red Bull Arena in Harrison, west of New York.

Retegui scored five minutes before half-time from a pass from Andrea Cambiaso, and three minutes later Venezuela’s Darwin Machis equalized after a mistake by goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. Coach Luciano Spalletti’s team controlled the game for long periods, but were only allowed to celebrate again ten minutes before the end of the game when Retegui secured the victory.
