Italy Aims for Success at World Archery Championships in Berlin

Italy will be involved in the World Championships in Berlin from 1 to 6 August. After the 1979 (Berlin) and 2017 (Leipzig) editions, it will be the third world championship to be held in Germany and it will be a particularly important edition given that team passes for the Olympic Games in Berlin will also be up for grabs in the German capital. Paris 2024.
The 55th World Archery Congress is also scheduled to take place in Berlin from 27 to 28 July, on the occasion of which FITARCO President Mario Scarzella, who has held the role of Deputy Vice President of the International Federation for two terms, is a candidate as Vice President.

TO BERLIN TO FLY TO PARIS

For now, the Italian archery team has won an individual women’s card for the next Games, thanks to the bronze obtained by Chiara Rebagliati at the European Games in Krakow. In Berlin it will be the first chance to qualify the entire teams, thus taking the three passes for the men and the three for the women which represent the maximum possible number for the Olympics. The qualifiers will be awarded to the best three teams in the rankings at both the men’s and women’s World Championships.

The objective is to try to qualify both trios by returning to the Olympics in full force after the Azzurri participated in Tokyo with only one male athlete and the female team.
Naturally this would be a real feat, considering that in the past it was enough to reach the quarter-finals to qualify for the Games, while now one must aim to reach the world championship podium by overcoming the competition from very strong Asian teams such as South Korea, China and Taipei , those from the Old Continent and Eastern Europe, as well as high-level trios such as those brought by India or the representatives of North and South American countries.

THE START OF THE COMPETITION AFTER THE WORLD ARCHERY CONGRESS

The Italian delegation will arrive in Berlin on 30 July. The official start of the competitions is scheduled for Tuesday 1 August with the 72 arrows of the ranking round of both the recurve and the compound which will establish the scoreboard of the direct clashes. On Wednesday there will be the mixed team and team preliminaries, while Thursday will be the day of the individual competitions, again with the preliminary rounds. Friday 4th the team finals decisive for the Olympic passes, Saturday 5th the compound finals and Sunday 6th August ends with the challenges for the individual world championship podium of the Olympic arch.

THE AZURRI CALLED UP

There will be a total of twelve Italians who will fly to Berlin. In the men’s Olympic arc, there is space for Mauro Nespoli (Aeronautica Militare), fresh from the individual gold in the third stage of the World Cup in Medellin, together with Federico Musolesi (Aeronautica Militare) and Alessandro Paoli (Fiamme Azzurre), the same trio who won gold at the last European Games. For the women, the choice fell on the starting trio in Tokyo of the Fiamme Oro: Tatiana Andreoli, Lucilla Boari and Chiara Rebagliati, who won the individual bronze at the European Games in Krakow, while all together the Italians climbed to the third step of the team podium in the same competition.

In the compound the spearheads will be Marco Bruno (Fiamme Azzurre) and Elisa Roner (Kosmos Rovereto) who won bronze in the mixed team on Polish soil and then individual silver and gold. For Roner, the season so far has been a real fairy tale given that in her first international trip she also won bronze in the World Cup in Antalya. Completing the compound teams will be Elia Fregnan (Arcieri Del Torrazzo). Federico Pagnoni (Bresciani Archers), Andrea Nicole Moccia (Del Torresin Archers) and Marcella Tonioli (Montalcino Archers). The reserves at home will be Michea Godano (Arcieri Tigullio) and Irene Franchini (Fiamme Azzurre).
The federal staff that will accompany the Azzurri to Berlin will be made up of the technical director of the Olympic arch Giorgio Botto, the Olympic technicians Matteo Bisiani and Amedeo Tonelli, the compound technical director Flavio Valesella, the psychologist Manolo Cattari and the physiotherapist Andrea Rossi.

DOUBLE MEETING IN VIEW OF THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

To better prepare for the important event in Berlin, the Olympic team’s Azzurri held a meeting in Liguria, in San Bartolomeo al Mare, on their return from the European Games in Krakow, to carry out shooting tests in a windy environment. Before leaving for Germany, however, the six recurve archers called up for the World Championships will be, from 27 to 30 July, at the Federal Center of Cantalupa (To) for a second meeting under the orders of the technical director of the sector Giorgio Botto, of the technicians Matteo Bisiani and Amedeo Tonelli and the athletic trainer Jacopo Cimmarrusti.
