Inmate tortured in Antwerp prison: the victim’s five fellow prisoners placed under arrest warrant

The victim was found Tuesday evening in critical condition in his cell, which he had to share with five other people due to prison overcrowding. The abuse allegedly lasted several days without prison staff noticing it.

According to the union front, the facts went unnoticed because the working conditions within the penitentiary establishment do not allow for in-depth daily checks but also because the victim was forced by her attackers to lie down on her bed under a blanket and pretend everything was normal. The facts were only revealed when the perpetrators of the violence broadcast the images of the abuse. Police and prosecutors have opened an investigation and the prison administration has also promised an internal investigation.
