Injury Blow: Werder Bremen Striker Dawid Kownacki Out for Several Weeks

Werder Bremen also paid dearly for the weak test match against Hannover 96 (1:3). As feared, striker Dawid Kownacki suffered a serious injury and will be out for some time.

In general, it’s not Dawid Kownacki’s season (yet). The 27-year-old Pole, who came from Fortuna Düsseldorf in the 2nd Bundesliga in the summer of 2023, still has no goals or assists in 16 Bundesliga games for SV Werder Bremen.

In the test match on Thursday against second division representatives Hannover 96 (1:3), the attacker, who was often brought in as a joker (13 substitutions, three starting eleven appearances including three substitutions), was on the pitch from the start, but had to go around in the middle of the first section 35th minute down with a grip on the leg. After the friendly, head coach Ole Werner feared nothing too good and spoke of problems in his thigh.

Kownacki has “big plans”

And like the SVW this Friday lunchtime, among other things X posted, the fears were confirmed. The Green-Whites wrote: “Kownacki sustained a muscle injury in his thigh during the test and will not be available for the coming games.”

“This is very annoying for Dawid and for us, because he had a lot planned for the game and was very committed,” Clemens Fritz, head of professional football at Werder Bremen, was quoted as saying. Combined with the hope “that he will be available to us again against Stuttgart in four weeks at the latest.”

Conversely, this means that the Hanseatic League does not expect Kownacki to be in the squad for the upcoming games against Wolfsburg (March 30th), in Frankfurt (April 5th) and against leaders Leverkusen (April 14th). Only then will the Polish national player (seven international matches) be allowed to show and prove himself again.
