In pink for the European Championships: Germany’s new jersey causes fan anger

Germany’s European Championship jersey causes fan anger

Football Germany is looking forward to the home European Championships in the summer. However, the fans cannot get used to the new jerseys. They don’t like the choice of color at all, at least for the away jersey.

Florian Wirtz is thrilled with the new away jersey.

In the summer, Germany wants to climb Europe’s football throne for the fourth time after 1972, 1980 and 1996. Now the European Championship hosts are presenting their new jerseys. The two variants could hardly be more different.

The home jersey is white. On the shoulders, the color gradient in black, red and gold is intended to be reminiscent of eagle wings. The player numbers are printed in a 3D 90s style. This is well received by the fans. Under the DFB team’s Instagram post you can read comments like “great”, “badly nice” or “so legendary”. Few people don’t like it. Things look different with the away jersey.

“Really extraordinary”

This comes in pink with a gradient into dark purple and is intended to “represent the new generation of German football fans and the diversity of the country,” as the German Football Association (DFB) says in a statement. A diamond-shaped pattern on the chest is also reminiscent of eagle wings; the font does not have the 3D effect.

«I think the away jersey is very cool! “Something different and really extraordinary,” said national player Florian Wirtz (20) in the statement. An opinion that only a few fans share. On Instagram they ask themselves why it has to be pink of all things and describe the jersey as a “scandal”, “an impudence”, “absolutely ugly” and “sucks”.

Main point of criticism: The color has nothing to do with Germany. Instead, someone says: “It looks more like carnival.” Another comment goes even further: “We should be ashamed of the away jersey.” And someone prophesied: “The whole world will mock us again for this.”

In pink against the national team?

The jerseys will be used for the first time in the friendly matches against France (March 23) and Holland (March 26). Women will also wear them in the future. However, only the home jersey, away from home they continue to wear green.

The jersey will make its first appearance at the European Championships in the opening game against Scotland (June 14th, 9 p.m.). In the three group games, Germany will only be played as an away team once: on June 23rd (9 p.m.) against Switzerland. It is questionable whether the pink jersey will be used. Because if the national team played in red, it would be a hassle. (bir)
