Iga Świątek’s Miami Title Hopes Dashed After Shocking Exit in Round of 16

After the title in Indian Wells, Iga Świątek was also considered the favorite in Miami. But the Pole no longer has a chance of winning the title.

World number one Iga Świątek was surprisingly eliminated in the round of 16 in Miami. The Pole, who recently won the start of the “Sunshine Double” in Indian Wells, lost to the Russian Yekaterina Alexandrowa 4:6, 2:6. “I’m disappointed because I thought I would play better here,” Świątek said after the game.

In fact, the 22-year-old had already struggled in the round of 16 and lost the first set in the tiebreak against Linda Noskova – the player she had already defeated at the Australian Open. Now the end came one lap later.

Zverev and Koepfer in the eighth line

The German tennis professional Yannick Hanfmann, for his part, missed out on reaching the round of 16 in Miami. Against Grigor Dimitrov from Bulgaria, the Karlsruhe player lost 1:6, 0:6 without a chance after just 47 minutes of play. A few hours earlier, compatriot Jan-Lennard Struff had also failed in the third round with a 6:7 (3:7), 4:6 against Australian Alex De Minaur.

With Olympic champion Alexander Zverev and Dominik Koepfer, two Germans are in the round of 16 in Florida. In the round of the last 16, number four seed Zverev will play against Karen Khachanow from Russia on Tuesday. Koepfer will also face a top Russian player from 5 p.m., Daniil Medvedev.

Zverev had previously beaten the American Christopher Eubanks 7:6 (7:4) and 6:3. Koepfer defeated 14th seeded Frenchman Ugo Humbert 3:6, 6:4, 6:3 after 2:14 hours in the hard court tournament.
