“How many rounds are left?” The French crossed the finish line twice, it cost her the victory

Doriane Pin dominated the first weekend of the Formula 1 Women’s Academy, but miscommunication with the team robbed her of her second win.

The weekend of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix also included the opening two races of the new season of the all-female Formula Academy F1 series. It was clearly mastered by the French competitor Doriane Pinová.

While Friday’s victory was unequivocal, Saturday’s triumph was lost to the 20-year-old pilot after the race. The reason was very curious.

Pinova crossed the finish line two seconds ahead of Great Britain’s Abbi Pulling. However, the new winner wasn’t sure if it was really over.

“How many more laps to the finish line?” she asked over the team radio. But on the pit wall of the Italian Prema stable there was a stormy celebration right now, so there was no one to answer the rider.

Pinová interpreted it as meaning that she should continue racing and continued to rush around the circuit in Jeddah at full speed. It wasn’t until she passed the checkered flag again that red flags finally stopped her.

Meanwhile, a frightened race engineer, Premy, spoke into the headphones: “Dorian, what are you doing? There’s a checkered flag.”

At that, the surprised pilot countered with the sentence: “But you didn’t tell me!”

She enjoyed Saturday’s success for only a few tens of minutes. Then came the verdict of the race directorate: for not slowing down after crossing the finish line, she received a pit stop penalty. This turned into a 20-second penalty, and the Frenchwoman fell to ninth place on the scoreboard.

Former F1 champion Damon Hill criticized the events at the Saudi Arabian circuit. “Maybe they should announce the end of the race with red lights too instead of just waving the flag about 20 feet up (6 meters, auto note) in a blind spot. Maybe? I’m not an expert. But yes, I am!” said the Brit on the social network X (formerly Twitter).
