Yes, cowboys in racing still exist.

At 10 kilometers from the finish in the Arden Challenge, the promising peloton was suddenly joined by a loose horse. The animal had ended up just behind the peloton and followed galloping in the wake of the riders.

A scene that resulted in viral images, but was not without danger.

Lars Daniels also realized this, who was fortunately riding at the back of the pack at the time. Our 23-year-old compatriot from Cycling Team Kontich grew up in a riding school and is used to dealing with horses. When he spotted the animal, he immediately intervened.

I grabbed the reins and started braking as hard as I could.

“I thought to myself: yes, how do I solve this? The horse kept storming and could run into the peloton or be run over itself,” Daniels testified at Het Nieuwsblad. “I just grabbed the reins and started braking as hard as I could.”

Successfully. Our young compatriot was able to stop the animal and hand it over to a police officer and the rider in question.

All’s well that ends well. Daniels would ultimately finish 93rd, but was of course the man of the race after the finish.
