Harry Kane once again demonstrated his top class in Bayern’s biggest win since October. The Englishman is now chasing the Lewandowski record. A fellow countryman set a much older record on Saturday.

Late in the evening, Harry Kane’s compatriot set a record. Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho scored his first goal since his return to BVB and the 39th Bundesliga goal of his career in the 2-1 win in Bremen. This meant he equaled Tony Woodcock as the English record shooter. In third place is HSV idol Kevin Keegan, but behind him – in his first season – is Harry Kane.

After his next goal show on Saturday afternoon, the Bayern star first sets course for Robert Lewandowski’s Bundesliga record. “I trust Harry with anything. He does what he always does throughout his career. He scores, he is a role model, he is a great personality,” said coach Thomas Tuchel when he was asked about Kane and Lewandowski’s record after Saturday’s 8-1 win against FSV Mainz 05.

The former Bayern world footballer Lewandowski broke Gerd Müller’s legendary mark in the 2020/21 season and scored 41 goals. Nine games before the end of the season, Kane has 30 goals. The English international became the first player in Bundesliga history to score eight multiples in his first season.

“I am in a good position and feel good. 30 goals is a nice milestone at this point in the season,” said Kane. There are still a few games left and hopefully there will be a few more goals.

Neuer keeps his fingers crossed for Kane

Kane demonstrated his versatility in the 8-1 win against FSV Mainz 05 on Saturday. He hit with his right, his left and his head. “It’s a gift to be able to train him,” said Tuchel about the 100 million euro purchase from the summer.

Leon Goretzka’s brace and Serge Gnabry’s remarkable goal in his Bundesliga comeback were almost lost in the shadow of Kane’s goal show.

“Harry is a phenomenon with his goal rate. But it’s also unbelievable how he works for the team,” said sports director Christoph Freund. The preparatory work before Jamal Musiala’s goal was also outstanding. He didn’t want to single anyone out, but of course Kane was a very important factor, said Freund.

Like coach Tuchel, captain Manuel Neuer didn’t want to make a ranking with Kane. When asked whether Kane would reach Lewandowski’s mark, the Bayern keeper said: “I’m keeping my fingers crossed.”
