The German Handball Association is extending the contracts with its two national coaches Alfred Gislason and Markus Gaugisch. The President is pleased that there is now clarity. But that doesn’t exist at the moment.

The German Handball Association has prematurely extended its contracts with men’s national coach Alfred Gislason and women’s head coach Markus Gaugisch. The Icelander’s new contract, which would have expired in the summer, is dated until the end of February 2027. Gaugisch’s working paper runs until the end of June 2026. The DHB executive board unanimously decided on further cooperation at the weekend, as the association announced on Monday.

However, there are conditions that seem strange: the Icelander’s new contract, which would have expired in the summer, is dated until the end of February 2027. The prerequisite for the running time is successful qualification for the Olympic Games. Otherwise the contract ends in 2024.

For both coaches and their teams, Olympic qualification is directly on the agenda. The men will meet Algeria, Croatia and Austria in Hanover from March 14th to 17th. The women will play against Montenegro, Slovenia and Paraguay in Neu-Ulm from April 11th to 14th for an Olympic ticket. The association could have waited for the tournament in the near future if it tied the contracts to the successes there.

Fourth at the home European Championships

Gislason took over the position in spring 2020 and celebrated his greatest success to date with fourth place at this year’s home European Championships. Gaugisch has been responsible for the handball players since April 2022 and took sixth place at the World Cup in December.
