The opponents of the German handball players in qualifying for the 2026 European Championship have been determined. The DHB team can already win against two teams this year.

Germany’s handball players are once again facing Austria in the fight for a ticket to the 2026 European Championship. Other opponents are Switzerland and Turkey, as the draw in Copenhagen revealed. National coach Alfred Gislason’s team is the clear favorite in their group.

The DHB team had already played against Austria twice this year. There was a draw at the home European Championships, but Germany won the decisive duel for an Olympic ticket last Sunday. The DHB selection celebrated a clear victory against Switzerland in the European Championship opening game in January.

A total of 32 teams in 8 groups are fighting for the 20 remaining places for the European Championships in Denmark, Sweden and Norway. The top two teams in each group qualify for the finals. The four best third parties also go to Scandinavia. The qualification will be played between November 6th, 2024 and May 11th, 2025. The three hosts and defending champions France have already secured their European Championship ticket.

The last German European Championship medal was eight years ago. In 2016, the former squad around right winger Tobias Reichmann won gold in Poland. The DHB team finished the home European Championships this year in fourth place.
