Hamburg Open to Return to Clay Court Season in 2025, Gaining Importance Before French Open

As of: March 22, 2024 2:54 p.m

Good news for the Hamburg Open: The ATP has decided that the tennis tournament at Rothenbaum will take place again in the classic clay court season from 2025. Shortly before the French Open, the event is likely to gain enormous importance.

As the players’ association announced on Friday, next year the game will be played in Hamburg from May 18th to May 24th. This means that the 500 tournament on the Elbe is immediately before the Roland Garros Grand Slam, which begins a day later.

Parallel to the tournament in the Hanseatic city, only one of the 250 category is taking place: the event in Geneva.

“The change in the calendar will have a positive effect on the Hamburg ATP tournament and, above all, the players will be happy. Because the highlight of the clay court season will take place directly afterwards with the French Open in Paris,” said DTB President Dietloff von Arnim in a statement quoted. The association holds the license for the tournament at Rothenbaum, which will take place this year for the last time (for now) after Wimbledon from July 13th to 21st.

DTB wants to “continue the success story”

Von Arnim and the German Tennis Association now want to “continue the success story at Hamburg’s Rothenbaum.” After all, the tournament’s license as a 500 event was recently extended until at least 2037. The DTB also presented a new organizer, “Tennium”. Von Arnim spoke of “long-term planning security”.

Plans for this year are already in full swing. With Alexander Zverev, who won the tournament last year, and world number seven Holger Rune from Denmark, two top players have already confirmed their attendance.
