Guanajuato Judokas Prisca Awiti and Paulina Martínez Face Early Exit in Grand Slam Series

León, Guanajuato.- The bad streak of the Guanajuato judokas Prisca Awiti and Paulina Martínez in the Grand Slam series continues, since they once again had their debut and farewell in their respective divisions.

Within the contest that took place in Tbilisi, Georgia, Awiti Alcaraz did not manage to transcend in the 63 kilograms, where she was quickly dispatched by the experienced Italian Savita Russo. Just as happened in Uzbekistan and Austria, the Tokyo 2021 Olympian and Central American champion had hoped to at least access the repechage, but that was not the case since the Amazonian would be out of combat in the final of the “D” graph.

The gold medal was won by the Canadian Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard, after beating the Polish Angelika Szymanska, while the bronze was shared by the South Korean Jisu Kim and the Dutch Joanne Van Lieshout.

For her part, in the 52 kilograms, Martínez suffered the same fate as she was prematurely surpassed by an old acquaintance such as the Brazilian Larissa Pimenta. The repechage option was also diluted for the “Guanajua” since the Amazonian failed in her attempt to get into the qualifiers for the medals.

The Spanish Ariane Toro would rise to the top of the podium after winning a close and exciting fight against the Croatian Ana Puljiz, while the third step was occupied by the German Mascha Ballhaus and the competitor from Kosovo, Distria Krasniqi.

Next weekend, Awiti and Martínez will seek revenge at the Grand Slam in Antalya, Turkey, a competition that will distribute important points to the international ranking with a view to the culmination of the qualifying process for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
