Grigor Dimitrov Upsets Carlos Alcaraz to Reach Miami Tennis Tournament Semifinals

The 11th seed Grigor Dimitrov caused an upset on Friday by winning against favorite Carlos Alcaraz 6-2, 6-4 in the quarter-finals of the Miami tennis tournament.

It’s a second consecutive victory for Dimitrov ahead of the Spaniard. He got the better of Alcaraz at the Shanghai Masters in 2023. Dimitrov now has a meeting with Alexander Zverev in the next round.

The other semi-final will pit Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev, second and third seeds respectively. This match will be a repeat of last year’s final, won by Medvedev.

Alcaraz, who won the Miami tournament in 2022, came in full of confidence after beating Medvedev in the final of the Indian Wells tournament.

Alcaraz trailed by a break in the second set, but brought it back at even service, at 4-4. Dimitrov won the next two games, however, breaking Alcaraz to end the match.

Earlier in the day, the 5th player in the world was effective in reaching the final four by beating Hungarian Fabian Marozsan (57th) 6-3, 7-5.

Completely in control, relying on a powerful first ball, the 26-year-old German, seeded number 4, took the lead in both sets.

Marozsan gave up his throw at key moments, at the start of the first set then by committing a double fault on the first set point obtained by his opponent.

The 24-year-old Hungarian then recovered well, holding his opponent high as soon as the exchange lasted. But here again, the first match point was the right one for Zverev on Marozsan’s serve in the 11th game of the second set.

The Hungarian should gain 19 places in the ATP rankings at the end of a tournament where he offered himself two top-10 players: the Dane Holger Rune (no. 7) in the second round and the Australian Alex De Minaur no. 10 in the eighth .

The other semi-final will pit Italian Jannik Sinner (world No. 3) against Russian Daniil Medvedev (No. 4) on Friday.
