The last quarterfinal game of the ATP 1000 tournament in Miami took place on Friday night (CET). Carlos Alcaraz was dominated and defeated by Grigor Dimitrov. This defeat for the Spaniard opens the door for Jannik Sinner to second place in the world rankings.

The Bulgarian tennis professional Grigor Dimitrov surprisingly defeated world number two Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals of the Masters tournament in Miami. On Thursday (local time), Dimitrov moved into the semi-finals after a convincing 6:2, 6:4 in 1:33 hours and will meet the German Olympic champion Alexander Zverev, who had previously beaten Fabian Marozsan from Hungary.

Dimitrov took the first serve game from Alcaraz and won the first and second sets with a break, thus winning the match. Dimitrov and Zverev last faced each other in September last year at a tournament in Chengdu, China, when Zverez won in the semifinals. The 26-year-old from Hamburg has won seven of the eight duels against Dimitrov so far.

Sinner can become number 2

Carlos Alcaraz’s defeat opens the door to number two in the world rankings for South Tyrol’s tennis professional Jannik Sinner. In order to actually overtake the Spaniard, Sinner has to win the tournament in Miami. If he manages to do this, he will be the new number two in the world from Monday.
