Parts of the central U.S. states of Kansas and Missouri were hit by extremely large hail, paralyzing traffic along Interstate 70, and weather experts said it was best for residents to stay indoors. Hail is caused by strong convection, and this weather structure can easily trigger tornadoes.
The Associated Press reported that at least one unconfirmed tornado occurred in Alta Vista, Kansas, on Wednesday. The National Weather Service said that before 6 a.m. on Thursday, strong wind gusts of up to 96 kilometers per hour also occurred in northern Kansas, and “gorilla hail” fell in many places overnight.
Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski said “gorilla hail” is a term coined by extreme meteorologist and wind chaser Reed Timmer to describe the largest hailstones. People from north-central Kansas to north-central Missouri have picked up hailstones ranging from the size of golf balls to the size of baseballs.
“It’s very dangerous, if you get hit in the head, it could be fatal,” Sosnovsky said.
