Good performance by Asturias in the National Winter Canoeing Championship: regional athletes achieve two medals in Seville

The Castilian-La Mancha Paco Cubelos (UCAM), revalidated, for the sixth time, the title of Spanish Winter champion, elucidated in the waters of Guadalquivir, over the distance of 5,000 meters. The man from Talavera won the sprint against the Asturian Pedro Vázquez Llenin (Kayak Tudense), the bronze medal going to the Asturian Javi López (Los Cuervos de Pravia). That shortlist was the great protagonist of the test, along with Matías Otero (Kayak Tudense) and Adrián Martín (Escuela Piragüismo Aranjuez)fourth and fifth, respectively.

The Canguese Alberto Plaza Sagredo (SCD Ribadesella) took sixth place in that long-distance final of the LIV Spanish Winter Championship, the first major national event of the year 2024, followed by the Rioselians Pelayo Roza (Fluvial de Lugo) and Miguel Llorens López ( SCD Ribadesella), seventh and eighth. For his part, and president of the Royal Spanish Canoeing Federation, the Parragués Javi Hernandezwith the colors of the Los Rápidos-Jaire Aventura club, was classified in a creditable thirteenth place in the K-1 senior category.

In sub-23 K-1, Alberto Llera Serrano from Rio de Janeiro (El Sella Canoeing) won another gold medal – third, after those achieved in 2021 and 2022, in that same Seville setting in the aforementioned category. The silver medal went to Diego Fernández Bedia (Los Cuervos de Pravia), after a great regatta, and bronze went to Galician Martin Lopez (Nautical Firrete). Ernesto Goribar (El Sella) was done with fourth place; Miguel Serrano (Piraguas Villaviciosa-The Piper), sixth; and Daniel Stephens (The Ravens), seventh.

In senior K-1 women, the Extremaduran from Iuxtanam Monteoro Estefanía Fernández also revalidated her Winter champion title. The Asturian Miriam Vega (Grupo Covadonga) and the Zamora Laura Pedruelo (CD Durius) won the silver and bronze medals, respectively. Another group kayaker, Celia Remis from Parrague finished in tenth position.

In the under-23 girls, María Paraja from Gijón (Grupo Covadonga) won the silver medal, only beaten by Carla Vey from the Balearic Islands (Náutico de Palma). Third, and bronze medalist, was Galician Irene Lata (Ría de Betanzos). Other Asturians in the top-ten of the category: Carla Corral (SD Santiagotarrak) from Cangue, fourth; the coañesa Lucía Val (Rías Baixas-Boiro), sixth; and Llara Tuset (City of Lugo) from Aviles, ranked tenth.

The Asturian Yaiza Novo, Spanish champion in junior K-1

Regarding the junior kayak categories, highlight the golden medal, brand new champion of Spain, of the Pravian Yaiza Novo (Los Gorilas de Candás), in K-1; as well as the bronze medal, in men’s K-1, from Diego Lago (Los Gorilas de Candas).
