German Tennis Talents Shine Despite Challenges: Noma Noha Akugue Advances, 16-year-old DTB Hopeful Plays Double Shift

Noma Noha Akugue was able to avert an embarrassment, a 16-year-old DTB hopeful has to play twice. There were or are a few games on the program for the German tennis talents on Thursday. However, some young actors had to pack their bags.

Noma Noha Akugue is in the quarterfinals of the W35 tournament in Alaminos-Larnaca (Cyprus). However, the 20-year-old German had more trouble than expected.

The number 185 in the ranking was clearly favored against the 19-year-old Irishwoman Celine Simunyu (number 916 in the world rankings), but after winning the first set (6:3), she surprisingly and clearly lost the second round 1:6. The Hamburger suddenly revealed enormous difficulties with her own serve and came crashing down. However, Noha Akugue caught herself in the decider and ultimately didn’t give her opponent the slightest chance (6:1).

In the round of the last eight, Lina Gjorcheska from Macedonia (number 239 in the world rankings) or the Italian Deborah Chiesa (number 586 in the world rankings) are now waiting for Noha Akugue.

16-year-old has to work a double shift

Justin Engel (number 1361 in the world rankings) also made an exclamation mark at the M15 tournament in Antalya (Turkey). In the morning, the 16-year-old DTB hopeful defeated the Swiss Louroi Martinez (number 1497 in the world rankings) in three sets (6:7, 6:2, 6:2) and a little later also defeated the Romanian Ioan Alexandru Chirita (number 1010 the world rankings) with 7:6 and 6:2.

In the quarterfinals, Engels now has to compete against the Austrian Joel Schwärzler (number 1061 in the world rankings).

Lewie Lane also has a chance of doing the same. John Sperle (number 881 in the world rankings), however, missed a surprise against the top seeded Romanian Filip Cristian Jianu (number 311 in the world rankings), Marlon Vankan (number 572 in the world rankings) unexpectedly lost to Louis Tessa from France (number 895 in the world rankings).

DTB duo has to give up

There is also bad news from Monastir. At the W15 event in Tunisia on Thursday, the last impressive 18-year-olds Helena Buchwald and Anna Petkovic were eliminated.

For Buchwald (number 1213 in the world rankings), the Russian Evialina Laskevich (number 692 in the world rankings) was one size too big in the round of 16, Petkovic (currently not in the world rankings) failed due to the Slovakian Radka Zelnickova (number 665 in the world rankings).

Johanna Silva (number 899 in the world rankings) has not yet played her game, but with the former Austrian top player Tamira Paszek (number 341 in the world rankings) she also has an enormous hurdle in front of her.

Maya Drozd (number 1133 in the world rankings), who made it into the main draw at the W15 tournament in Sharm ElSheikh (Egypt) through qualification, suffered a severe defeat. In the round of 16, Frenchwoman Julie Belgraver swept the 19-year-old German off the court 6-1 and 6-0.
