The four victims, including a child, were shot overnight in the two joint communities of Scheeßel and Bothel in the Rotenburg (Wümme) district between Bremen and Hamburg, the authorities said in a statement.

The suspect, a German soldier, turned himself in to police shortly after the shooting, they said. His motive was not immediately clear, but they said that “a family-related motive cannot be ruled out.”
