After a three-week hiatus, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Tour 2024 has resumed in Germany with the ongoing German Open. A few of the Asian shuttlers participated in the Badminton Asia Team Championships in mid-February. However, players from Europe and other continents have been missing in action from major competitions for some time now. Therefore, the tournament in Germany holds significant value.

Held for the first time in 1955, the German Open (now known as the Yonex German Open for sponsorship reasons) badminton tournament is celebrating its 65th edition in 2024. It is organised by the German Badminton Association, or Deutscher Badminton Verband (DBV). The tournament was given the status of a BWF Super 300 event in 2018.

Danish shuttler Erland Kops and Chinese legend Lin Dan hold the record for the most men’s singles titles (six each). On the other hand, Swedish player Eva Twedberg has won the most women’s singles titles with six to her name. While Hong Kong’s Ng Ka Long won the men’s singles title in 2023, Akane Yamaguchi of Japan was the women’s singles champion.

Being a BWF World Tour Super 300 competition, the monetary rewards at the German Open are more than those offered at the non-BWF World Tour events. However, it is less than every other BWF World Tour competition.

According to a report by the Badminton World Tourthe prize money pool at the German Open 2024 stands at USD 210,000 (around SGD 282,676).

Out of this prize money pot, the champions of the men’s and women’s singles categories will receive payouts of USD 15,750 and 7,000 BWF points. On the other hand, the runners-up in both the singles categories will be given USD 7,980 along with 5,950 BWF points. The players who get ousted from the semi-finals in both categories will each get to take home USD 3,045 and 4,900 BWF points, while the losing quarter-finalists in both the singles categories will get USD 1,260 and 3,850 BWF points each.

In a similar vein, the winners of the men’s, women’s and mixed doubles categories will be rewarded with USD 16,590 and 7,000 BWF points. The runners-up in all three categories will pocket USD 7,980 and 5,950 BWF points. While the losing semi-finalists will each get USD 2,940 along with 4,900 BWF points, the shuttlers exiting from the quarter-finals will each be given USD 1,522.5 and 3,850 BWF points.

It is important to note that the badminton players in all categories and disciplines who bow out of the German Open 2024 before the Last 16 stage will receive BWF points but no prize money.

The German Open 2024, which commenced on Tuesday, 27 February, will conclude with the finals of all the categories on Sunday, 3 March.

Like the rest of the tournament, the summit clashes of all the categories will be played at the Westenergie Sporthalle in Mulheim, Germany. The stadium has a capacity of around 4,000 spectators.
