Frostbite horror at Kansas City Chiefs NFL Playoff game leaves dozens injured

Dozens of Kansas City Chiefs fans suffered serious frostbite on their hands during the NFL Playoffs game (26-7) that pitted their team against the Miami Dolphins.

The match was played in January at Arrowhead Stadium in a day in extreme temperatures below zero (-20 with a wind chill of -32) and in which dozens of fans suffered frostbite of varying levels.

The 70,000 spectators who watched the match live suffered the Coldest game in Chiefs history and fourth coldest game in NFL history.

It was so cold at Arrowhead Stadium that Even Patrick Mahomes’ helmet was fractured after a strong blow already Chiefs coach Andy Reid’s mustache froze.

In the NFL there is no minimum temperature threshold below which games could not be played.

After the game, the Kansas City Fire Department reported that, due to the extreme cold, dozens of fans suffered frostbite and were transported to the hospital with injuries related to hypothermia.

One of those fans, who took off his gloves for five minutes to set up a tent in the Arrowhead Stadium parking lot, showed the consequences of the severe frostbite he suffered.

The medical director of the Grossman Burn Center at Research Medical Center in Kansas City has reported that the vast majority of Chiefs fans who suffered frostbite “are recommended to schedule amputations.”

The Grossman Burn Center confirmed that 70% of patients who suffered frostbite will have to undergo amputations, while the remaining 30% will be able to undergo oxygenation treatment in a hyberbaric chamber.
