From French Courts to Canadian University: The Journey of Basketball Star Amayane Ratier

At only 17 years old, Amayane Ratier is a rising figure in basketball. She will join the general and professional education college of Chicoutimi in the Canadian province of Saguenay. Just as she nourishes the dream of participating with her team in the UNSS world championships. These girls therefore launched a Leetchi prize pool to help them make this adventure a reality which, for Amayanne, would ultimately be the continuation of another started a few years ago…

The young player’s journey began at Jean-Moulin college, where she attracted the attention of recruiters from Creps de Toulouse, whom she joined in 2019. She was then spotted by Sylvie Gruszczynski, professional basketball player at Toulouse métropole basket and coach of the pole hope. From there, the story accelerates: in 2020, despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, she continued her development, confirming her potential during the CIZ (Camp Inter Zone), where she was selected to represent France at the Tournament des Demoiselles in Bourges.

Her talent did not take long to be noticed, and in August 2021, she joined the prestigious Basket Landes club, where she was recruited by Vincent Joly, director of the training center, and Jean Michel More, coach of the cadets. Since then, she has continued to shine on the pitch, accumulating successes: French UNSS champion with the Charles Despiau high school in Mont-de-Marsan in February 2023, quarter-final of the Coupe de France with Basket Landes in March of the same year, and vice-champion of France in the elite U18 French championship in May 2023.

In February 2024, Amayane writes a new page in her history and at the Charles Despiau high school by once again becoming French UNSS champion. This French title opened the doors to the UNSS world championships which will take place in Macau at the end of June 2024.

At the Canadian university

With a mixture of excitement and apprehension, the young Pechbonnilian is preparing to take a new step in her sporting career. She is preparing to leave the Basket Landes family to continue her studies and training across the Atlantic, at the CEGEP of Chicoutimi in the Canadian province of Saguenay. “I am very happy to take on this challenge,” says Amayane. She is preparing to begin her university education in Canada, while focusing on obtaining her baccalaureate, essential to begin this new phase of her life. This decision was not taken lightly. “I feel a certain apprehension at the idea of leaving not only my teammates and my friends at Basket Landes, but also my own family.”

However, she recognizes that it is “an exceptional opportunity that is offered here. I can’t wait to discover a new place and meet new people.”
