French Tennis Professional Arthur Cazaux Collapses During ATP Tournament in Miami: Opponent’s Response Sparks Controversy

There are anxious moments that take place at the ATP tournament in Miami. French tennis professional Arthur Cazaux (21) suddenly collapses in the middle of a match.

A physiotherapist immediately rushes to help, and the referee also makes his way to the player. Only one person doesn’t seem to care at all about his compatriot’s collapse: opponent Harold Mayot (22). He then has to justify his behavior in the face of angry reactions from the fans.

Mayot defends herself against accusations: “Stop spreading your hate”

The drama occurred on Monday (March 18, 2024) in the first round of qualifying for the Masters in Miami. With the score at 2:1 and 30:30 in the third set, Cazaux was ready to return.

But before his opponent could serve, the 21-year-old suddenly collapsed. Apparently his circulation stopped working after a good two hours of playing in the blazing sun.

While Cazaux lay dazed on the floor, Mayot first stood there and then calmly walked to the edge of the pitch to get his towel. A behavior that caused a lack of understanding among many fans. “How can Mayot just stand there?” asked a user on X. “Mayot doesn’t even act like he’s worried,” wrote another user.

A video of the scene can be seen at X:

There were also angry reactions to Mayot’s apparent indifference in France. “His reaction is disgusting,” one user wrote in French. After this post, the tennis professional defended himself.

“Stop creating a fake controversy over nothing,” Mayot wrote in response to the comment. “He had been unwell for a few service games and started getting cramps. “I didn’t see him fall over and I thought he was lying down because he had a cramp,” Mayot explained.

When he realized it was something serious, he immediately went to the other side to help Cazaux. “I was very worried,” said Mayot, who emphasized that the two were on friendly terms.

In fact, another video shows Mayot going to Cazaux a little later to inquire about his condition:

“Stop spreading your hate everywhere,” was the urgent appeal of the Frenchman, who wished his opponent a speedy recovery via X.

Cazaux, number 74 in the world, was unable to continue playing after the incident and had to forfeit the match when the score was 4:6, 7:5, 2:1. He was driven off the pitch in a wheelchair – in the presence of Mayot, by the way.
