French Judo Team Selections for Continental and World Championships

For the continental deadline, in Zagreb (April 25-28), five of the seven categories already have one or two holders. In -60 kg, Romain Valadier-Picard, 3rd in the recent Grand Slam in Tashkent (Uzbekistan), was selected. In -66 kg, Daikii Bouba will be in Croatia. Selected for the Olympics since February 23, Joan-Benjamin Gaba (-73 kg) and Aurélien Diesse (-100 kg) will also be there, unlike Maxime-Gaël Ngayap Hambou who, if he has the Olympic sesame in -90 kg , will therefore not compete in the European Championships.

Candidates for Paris 2024 in -90 kg but not selected, Axel Clerget (37 years old, Olympic mixed team champion at the 2021 Olympics) and Alexis Mathieu will “console” themselves with the European meeting.

Initially planned for June and finally placed in May by the International Federation, the Worlds in Abu Dhabi (May 19-24) are far enough away from the Paris Olympics to allow some to “double up” and thus pocket points for the Olympic ranking ( being in the top 8 allows you to avoid a too steep draw until the quarter-finals at the Olympics).

Thus, Luka Mkheidze (-60 kg), Walide Khyar (-66 kg), Joan-Benjamin Gaba (-73 kg), Alpha Djalo (-81 kg) and Maxime-Gaël Ngayap Hambou (-90 kg) were selected for the Worlds, which Romain Valadier-Picard (-60 kg) will also compete in.

These selections should be completed by the federation, particularly when Teddy Riner’s schedule is refined: for the moment, the +100 kg world champion is only registered for the Antalya Grand Slam (March 29-31) .
