DFB team has a perfect start to the European Championship year

The DFB team beat France 2-0 in the international match. WELT reporter Christian Beilfuss explains what influence the early goal and Kroos’ return had on this victory.

Germany surprisingly wins in France and plays its best international game in years. The opposing coach Deschamps is impressed by the DFB team and hears a lot from the French media. “Shipwreck, slap in the face, eyesore,” it says.

France coach Didier Deschamps praised the German national team for their courageous performance against the World Cup finalists. “We weren’t able to adapt to the level of our opponent,” he said after Germany’s 2-0 win in the European Championship test in Lyon. “They were very aggressive, very focused, they played a very good game,” said the 55-year-old. Germany celebrated its first victory in France in more than eleven years.

Deschamps expressly did not want to criticize any of his players individually. They had “collectively failed,” complained the former world-class player, who became world champion with France in 1998 as a player and in 2018 as a coach. He expects improvement in just three days at the next test against Chile in Marseille, although there is “tiredness in the team”. Deschamps assured us that we knew what to do. There is a “want and an ability, today we couldn’t,” he said.

At the European Championships in Germany this summer, France will be the big favorites with superstar Kylian Mpabbé and defender Dayot Upamecano from FC Bayern Munich. The opponents in Group D are the Netherlands, Austria and the winner of the play-off game between Wales and Poland.

Germany’s victory worries France’s press

Since the World Cup final against Argentina in Qatar in December 2022, which they lost on penalties, the French have only lost twice – both times against Germany. The 0-2 in Lyon was preceded by a 1-2 in Dortmund, when the DFB team was looked after by sports director Rudi Völler in September 2023 after Hansi Flick was eliminated as national coach. France remained undefeated in the European Championship qualification. The defeat against Germany has the French media worried.

(…) In addition to the track from start to finish, without soul and without idea, Les Bleus suffered a defeat against Germany, which is a disgrace three months before the European Championship.

The Liberation: “The Germans are burning, Les Bleus are going astray. The German team has definitely become Bleus’ feared opponent again. (…) Florian Wirtz’s supersonic goal, one of the fastest in international football, showed France’s deficits compared to its old rival, even though France was in a sporting crisis before the duel.
