Fortuna Düsseldorf Dominates, SC Paderborn Falters in 2nd Bundesliga Action

Fortuna Düsseldorf confidently fulfilled its duty against bottom team VfL Osnabrück on Friday evening. SC Paderborn, on the other hand, missed important points.

Fortuna Düsseldorf is third in the 2nd Bundesliga table at least until Sunday afternoon. Coach Daniel Thioune’s team won confidently 4-0 at VfL Osnabrück – and thus moved past Hamburger SV, who only host Wehen Wiesbaden on Sunday.

While Fortuna fulfilled its duty, SC Paderborn lost important points in the promotion battle. Coach Lukas Kwasniok’s team somewhat surprisingly lost to Eintracht Braunschweig 1:2. While Paderborn remains in sixth place in the table, Braunschweig is at least temporarily leaving the direct relegation position in 17th place and is now sixteenth.

That’s how the games went

Osnabrück – Düsseldorf

The Greek Christos Tzolis scored his sixth goal in the last five second division games and his 15th goal of the season overall in the 35th minute. Takashi Uchino (60th), Marlon Mustapha (72nd) and Ao Tanaka (88th) added three more goals in the second half. They gave Düsseldorf coach Daniel Thioune a successful return to the Bremer Brücke. The 49-year-old was active as a player, youth coach and head coach at VfL for a total of twelve years.

Fortuna played very calmly, very confidently and had the better chances from the start. Mustapha alone initially missed three of them (3rd/16th/30th). The Osnabrück team didn’t do enough offensively. The promotion candidate from Düsseldorf was clearly better in terms of play.

Paderborn – Braunschweig

SC Paderborn has missed a big opportunity in the promotion race, but Eintracht Braunschweig has set an example. The previous penultimate from Lower Saxony won 2-1 (0-0) against the sixth-place team on Friday evening and pushed Hansa Rostock into the direct relegation zone for at least one night. If Paderborn had won, they would have even overtaken third party Hamburger SV.

Eintracht coach Daniel Scherning, who worked as a player and assistant coach to Steffen Baumgart at SCP for a total of 14 years and whose family still lives in Paderborn, was able to celebrate the first lead after 58 minutes – Hasan Kurucay scored after a handball from Kai Klefisch with a penalty (59th). Paderborn’s coach Lukas Kwasniok then brought on striker Antonio Grimaldo for Klefisch and he equalized a few seconds later after a miss by Robin Krauße (61′). Rayan Philippe then scored Braunschweig’s victory in the 80th minute.
