Former world No. 1 Simona Halep’s suspension reduced from 4 years to 9 months

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) announced this Tuesday the reduction of Simona Halep’s suspension from 4 years to 9 months. The Romanian (32 years old), who has already served her suspension, will therefore be able to return to the field. The “court unanimously determined that the four-year period of ineligibility imposed by the Independent Tribunal of the ITF (International Tennis Federation) must be reduced to a period of ineligibility of nine months from October 7 2022, period which expired on July 6, 2023,” indicated the Lausanne body in a press release.

After three days of hearing in February, the CAS ruled that the former world number 1’s positive test came from a “contaminated supplement”, and that the anomalies in her biological passport could be linked to a “surgical operation” , according to the CAS press release. As a reminder, Halep had tested positive for Roxadustat after the 2022 US Open and had accused the food supplement company Quantum Nutrition.
