Former NHL Player Konstantin Koltsov’s Death Ruled as Suicide: Tennis Star Ex-Partner Investigated by Homicide Squad

The homicide squad is now investigating the death of ex-NHL professional Konstantin Koltsow († 42): As the Miami police announced, the tragedy surrounding the tennis star’s ex-partner is being treated as a suicide. Accordingly, the former ice hockey professional is said to have jumped from the balcony of his hotel room.

The authorities therefore rule out third-party negligence. The two-time Belarusian Olympian leaves behind three sons from a previous relationship. The ex-NHL professional has been in a relationship with tennis star Aryna Sabalenka (25) since 2021. The Belarusian has canceled her media appointments in the coming days, but is planning to appear in Miami.

In an initial statement, she described the 42-year-old’s death as an “unimaginable tragedy.” At the same time, Sabalenka confirmed that the couple had now separated. “Even though we were no longer together, my heart is broken,” writes the 42-year-old.

Despite the tragedy, the Belarusian wants to compete in Miami. She will face the American Paula Badosa tomorrow, Friday.

Koltsow most recently worked as an assistant coach for Salavat Yulaev in the Russian KHL. The Belarusian had already played for the club during his playing days and won the first championship title in the club’s history in 2008. In the NHL, Koltsow played three seasons for the Pittsburgh Penguins between 2003 and 2006.

His former team mourned the former striker via Twitter. “The Penguins extend their deepest condolences to the family and friends of former Penguins forward Konstantin Koltsov.” Pittsburgh selected the Belarusian in the first round of the draft in 1999, and he played 144 appearances in the NHL.
