President of the Chinese Football Federation between 2019 and 2023, Chen Xuyuan was sentenced on Tuesday to life in prison for corruption, according to state media. The leader admitted to having taken advantage of his position to accept bribes amounting to 81.03 million yuan, or more than 10 million euros, according to the People’s Daily.

For around ten years, Chinese President Xi Jinping has launched an anti-corruption campaign. It is in this context that the conviction of Xuyuan falls, as is that of the former coach Li Tie, in pre-trial detention since 2022. The Chinese technician is accused of having paid 255,000 euros to Xuyuan via Wuhan Zall, his former club, in order to get the job, and to have bought several second division matches.
