Former Brazilian footballer Dani Alves, convicted of sexual assault, will be able to leave prison on bail

A court in Barcelona decided on Wednesday that former Brazilian footballer Dani Alves will be able to temporarily leave prison, where he is serving a sentence for sexual assault, while awaiting a final sentence: to do so he will have to pay a one million euro bail.

Dani Alves, who is 40 years old, played for most of his career for Barcelona in Spain, but also for Juventus. For years he was one of the most representative footballers of the Spanish team, with which he won many trophies, as well as of the Brazilian national team. Last end of February he was sentenced in first instance to four and a half years in prison for sexual assault of a woman in a club in Barcelona in 2022. Then he appealed.

He had been in preventive detention since January 2023, and had never been released because the court had ruled that with his economic resources it would have been easy for him to escape from Spain and return to Brazil, a country that usually does not extradite its citizens . Also this week the prosecutor and the prosecution had opposed his lawyers’ request to release him for this very reason, but the court decided that the risk of flight has decreased compared to a year ago.

In addition to paying bail, Alves will have to surrender his Brazilian and Spanish passports and will have to appear in court every week. He was also given a restraining order banning him from coming within a kilometer of the woman who reported him.
