Former player settles accounts with BVB

Thomas Meunier takes on his former club Borussia Dortmund. The Belgian criticizes those responsible.

In January, Thomas Meunier ended his adventure at Borussia Dortmund after almost four years and moved to Turkish first division club Trabzonspor. However, the Belgian defender was not happy about the BVB bosses’ actions, as he emphasized at a press conference.

“Dortmund communicated to me, even though I was on the pitch, that the return of my competitor after his injury would put me on the sidelines again,” said Meunier, looking back on his apparently cold farewell. “I think there’s a bit of a lack of neutrality and competition.”

Meunier: Trabzonspor “the most interesting option”

What Meunier meant: The period from December to February when Julian Ryerson had to take a break due to an medial ligament injury. The 32-year-old replaced his teammate and was in the starting line-up in all seven Bundesliga games. Nevertheless, he had no real prospects with the Black and Yellows afterwards.

Meunier explained: “The message was clear: If you find another option: take your chance! Because in Dortmund it will be complicated.” So the defender had to “take a risk” and tried out with another team.

In the end, Meunier signed a contract with Trabzonspor until the summer of 2025. The Turkish first division club was “the most interesting option for the moment”.
