Julian Nagelsmann has announced his squad for the European Championship test matches against France and the Netherlands. The national coach has a few surprises in store and has nominated four Stuttgart professionals. A Hoffenheimer and a Heidenheimer are there for the first time.

Julian Nagelsmann has exactly 92 days until he has to deliver as national coach with the national team against Scotland at the home European Championships on June 14th in Munich. The tournament countdown started exactly three months before the opening game with the nomination for the two test matches against France on March 23rd in Lyon and three days later against the Netherlands in Frankfurt/Main.

Nagelsmann is sending a clear message with his squad. The 36-year-old dares to make a radical cut. He only nominated one BVB player, Niclas Füllkrug, but he did without Mats Hummels, Nico Schlotterbeck and Emre Can. “It is the case that the door is not closed for anyone who has not been nominated. I spoke to everyone. Momentum is very important for national teams. A position can always be exchanged. The door is not closed for anyone,” said Nagelsmann.

There are four players from VfB Stuttgart in the DFB squad: Waldemar Anton, Maximilian Mittelstädt, Deniz Undav and Chris Führich. “That’s also momentum. This year they are doing it very, very well. I could have invited two or three more from VfB,” said Nagelsmann.

FC Bayern has one more professional in the squad – Manuel Neuer, Thomas Müller, Joshua Kimmich, Jamal Musiala and, for the first time, Aleksandar Pavlovic join the national team from Munich. “We’ll see at the course whether that’s enough for Pavlovic to qualify for the European Championships. He speaks in the locker room and doesn’t hide despite his young age,” said Nagelsmann. As expected, Leon Goretzka was not nominated for the two groundbreaking test matches, but Toni Kroos is celebrating his comeback to the national team.

Beste and Beier are in the national team squad for the first time

The Real Madrid veteran will meet new faces there. Nagelsmann surprisingly appointed Jan-Niklas Beste from 1. FC Heidenheim to his squad. The 25-year-old is having a very strong season and is the newcomer’s guarantee of success with seven goals and ten assists. The appointment of Maximilian Beier is similarly surprising and consistent. The 21-year-old TSG Hoffenheim striker is in top form and has already scored twelve goals this Bundesliga season.

The squad, which meets next Monday in Frankfurt, will be led by captain Ilkay Gündogan. “Ilkay remains captain. This captain’s topic is intended to be a contact point for his colleagues. Players should feel like they have a leader in their ranks. He is representative of the team,” said Nagelsmann. The games against France and the Netherlands will be two tough tests for the national team.

“France is one of the top favorites for the title, and the Netherlands are also to be reckoned with,” Nagelsmann said recently. Nevertheless, the national coach spoke of “a perfect start to the European Championship year. I am sure that we have sold ourselves short over the past year, which none of us are happy with.”
