Fitness: How little exercise is enough?

The Germans don’t move enough. And that can be fatal. Lack of exercise leads to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure and thus to early mortality. “The World Health Organization (WHO) associates the lack of exercise with an increased mortality rate,” says Urs Granacher, head of the chair for exercise and movement science at the Institute for Sport and Sports Science at the University of Freiburg. Inactivity is the fourth most common reason for premature death.

But: How much exercise should you do to stay healthy? How much physical activity do you have to pack into your already busy everyday life in order to become more muscular or at least not sick? There has been a competition on the Internet for a long time: there are 10-minute, 7-minute and 5-minute programs. In some places there is even talk of just one minute per day. The offers are tempting because between work, children, friends and Netflix, the time slots for sports are often manageable. Many people ask themselves the question: How little is enough?
