Fitcarco President Mario Scarzella Elected Vice President of World Archery at 55th Congress: Azzurri Prepare for World Championships in Berlin for Chance at Paris 2024 Olympics

At the 55th World Archery Congress in Berlin, Fitarco President Mario Scarzella was elected vice president of the world federation. Today the arrival of the Azzurri in the German capital for the world championship: team passes for Paris 2024 are up for grabs

Berlin’s first commitment, on the political side, was a real success for Italy thanks to the election of Mario Scarzella as vice president of World Archery, on the occasion of the 55th congress of the international archery federation. The electoral appointment, as per tradition, precedes the world championships and now it is up to the athletes on the competitive side to try to make the Italians rejoice, given that the team passes for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games will be played in the German capital.

SCARZELLA SATISFIED

But let’s go step by step. Last Friday the president of fitarco and of the European federation Mario Scarzella, who had held the role of deputy vice-president of World Archery since 2011, was elected with over 62% of the votes, surpassing the other candidate, the Austrian Bettina Krtazmueller. The Italian success continued with the elections for the positions of the commissions: the referee Martino Miani was elected to the “Match Judges Commission”, the former Italian player and coach of the national team Natalia Valeeva to the “Technicians Commission” and doctor Fiammetta Scarzella in the “Medical Commission”. Yet another certificate of esteem that made Scarzella rejoice: “I am really satisfied for our country: the best news is in fact that all the Italian candidates were elected on the first ballot, testimony to the good work done internationally with our representatives. As far as I’m concerned, I thank the assembly for their trust, after 20 years of working for world archery it was not a given to obtain it. A vote that highlights the excellent relationship between Italy and other nations. My election is not only a reward for my commitment, but recognition of the work that the clubs, coaches and our athletes carry out on a daily basis, who have given strength to my candidacy and that of others. My compliments also go to my opponent, who had the support of the referees, of other nations, especially from the 3D and field world, after having made an excellent presentation. This is why my election makes me even more proud.”

to Berlin to fly to Paris

Now the word passes to the blue archers whose arrival in Berlin is expected in the evening. The expedition involved in the Olympic qualifying World Championships is made up of 12 archers, six for the recurve and six for the compound, accompanied by the technical director of the recurve Giorgio Botto, by the technicians Matteo Bisiani and Amedeo Tonelli, by the compound technical director Flavio Valesella, by the psychologist Manolo Cattari and the physiotherapist Andrea Rossi. In the curved space there are the protagonist athletes at the European Games in Krakow: Mauro Nespoli (Aeronautica Militare), fresh from the individual gold in the third stage of the World Cup in Medellin, together with Federico Musolesi (Aeronautica Militare) and Alessandro Paoli (Fiamme Azzurre), golden trio in Poland, with the Fiamme Oro trio who earned the third step of the podium in the Polish event: Tatiana Andreoli, Lucilla Boari and Chiara Rebagliati, who won the individual bronze at the European Games also valid for the women’s pass for the next Olympics. In the compound the spearheads will be Marco Bruno (Fiamme Azzurre) and Elisa Roner (Kosmos Rovereto) who won the mixed team bronze, silver and individual gold in Poland. Together with them also Elia Fregnan (Arcieri Del Torrazzo), Federico Pagnoni (Arcieri Bresciani), Andrea Nicole Moccia (Arcieri Del Torresin) and Marcella Tonioli (Arcieri Montalcino). To secure tickets for Paris, the Olympic trios will have a difficult task to say the least: the qualification of the teams is in fact assigned to the top three classified. In practice it will be necessary to get on the podium – unless the French teams medal – to be sure of arriving in Paris. A much more complicated process than in the past, considering that in the previous four-year periods it was sufficient to reach the quarter-finals. It goes without saying that the competition will be fierce and of a very high level, among the Asian bogeymen such as South Korea, China and Taipei, large nations such as India and the USA, plus the European and Eastern European teams, as well as the Central and South American ones. In short, to achieve the coup you need to be among the best, trying to put behind you the 81 nations present and the 530 archers competing on the Meifield lawn, at the Olympiapark, with the finals field set up instead at Olympischer Platz.

the program

The delegations arrive in Berlin today, Sunday 30 July and Tuesday 1 August there is the official start to the competition with the 72 ranking round arrows that define the scoreboard of individual and team direct clashes in both recurve and compound. On Wednesday the mixed team and team preliminaries (for the Olimpico we reach the quarter-finals), while Thursday 3 August will be the day of the individual competitions, again with the preliminary rounds. The team finals that determine which trios will leave for Paris 2024 will be held on Friday 4 August, while the individual compound finals will take place on Saturday 5 August and the recurve finals will end on Sunday 6 August. The Italian archers, after the European Games, carried out a double retreat to arrive prepared for this event: first in Liguria, in San Bartolomeo al Mare, to carry out shooting tests on a windy field and then, in these days preceding the departure, they returned to the federal technical center in Cantalupa (To). What could be done has been done. Now the field will speak. And it will be the number of arrows placed in the center of the target that will decide medals and Olympic qualifications.
