Filippo Baldassarri, born in 2006, right-handed pitcher for the Baseball Club Pesaro, is living the classic American dream. Since August of last year, he moved to Florida where he received a scholarship to complete his high school student-athlete journey at the prestigious North Broward Preparatory School in Coconut Creek, winner of the Florida High School title in 2021 and 2022 and Vice-Champion 2023. Filippo, how did you end up in the USA? “This journey began in October 2022 when I was called up, together with other Italian prospects, to the International Tournament “The World comes to Palm Beach” played in West Palm Beach Florida. At the end of the match where I pitched against Venezuela, I was approached by some high school coaches who proposed that I move to the USA to study and play. From that moment we started negotiations which resulted in the granting of the scholarship so, in August last year, I left for the USA”.
How did your season in the USA begin?
“I am very satisfied. The group is fantastic and made up of excellent elements. Everyone has welcomed me with open arms and tries to make me feel as little as possible missing home. In fact, they are all American kids who live with their families, in unlike me, I live in the school dormitory. The coaches are giving me great trust, entrusting me with the pitching mound as much as possible. Last week we won one of the most prestigious tournaments in the States in Alabama and this allowed us to reach the number 6 in the ranking of all high schools in America. An additional reason, the fact that my father had come to visit me, gave me further incentive to do well in the tournament and, fortunately, I succeeded.”
What goals have you set yourself? “Now I am 100% focused on the season that has just begun (8 wins and 1 loss). We are definitely aiming for the play-offs having a team that can do really well, then I will return in June for a couple of weeks in Italy and I will return to Florida for play the Summer League, a sort of championship with players selected from the various high schools and aimed at obtaining college scholarships, as there will be many observers”.
