Vasiljevs performed the optional skating cleanly and emotionally vividly, although he refrained from including the quadruple jump in the program. The judges evaluated Denis’ skating with 168.38 points, which gave him 257.80 points in the sum of two programs.
Vasiliev significantly fell short of his personal record both in the optional program (181.84 points) and in the total (272.08), but this did not prevent him from achieving the second best result in his career at the world championships.
On the other hand, Malinin stunned his competitors with six perfect quadruple jumps, which gave him 227.79 points in optional skating and 333.79 points in total.
Japanese figure skater Yuma Kagiyama fell after the triple axel jump, which, however, did not prevent him from accumulating 309.65 points, which allowed him to step onto the silver step of the podium.
The bronze medal with 284.39 points was earned by French European champion Adam Siao Him Fa, who was only in 19th place after the short program, but lost only to Malinin in the optional skating.
Two failed quadruple jumps and a fall at the beginning of the skating reduced the chances of the former two-time champion of Japan, Soma Uno, to retain the title. Uno was the leader after the short program, but remained fourth overall.
Vasiljevs took 8th place after the short program and was also eighth in optional skating.
At the end of the World Championship on Sunday in Montreal, the fans will be delighted with demonstrations.
