Fighting Parents Lead to U17 Basketball Match Played Behind Closed Doors

The two teams had already faced each other on February 21, things had degenerated. In the stands, several parents had made threats and insults. The closed session was declared by the league and it is not unanimous among the players.

“It’s a bit annoying for our parents. They are quite invested, not being able to today is a shame for them“.

On the part of the parents interviewed, the disappointment was palpable. “This decision shows people that we must maintain a sportsmanship and not bring extra-sporting problems onto the basketball courts.“.

Verbal violence, intimidation or even threats, these behaviors have no place on the ground. As for the coaches, opinions on the closed session are mixed.

“For some parents we sanction everyone, it’s a bit of a shame. We cannot be satisfied that a match is behind closed doors for young people. It should be a celebration and a pleasure“, estimates Didier Permalnaick.

This severe sanction is deemed necessary by the Basketball League. In the long term, the solution lies in awareness.

A complaint has been filed and criminal proceedings are underway against a person. The league’s disciplinary committee was also contacted.

“We hope that this will make certain people think and understand that when you are in the stands you have to set an example for the children. We must educate them, educating them is not insulting others“, explains Johan Guillou, President of the regional basketball league of Reunion.

If the decision of the disciplinary committee has not been made by the next match, there is a good chance that the decision of a match behind closed doors will be repeated.
