Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz will not participate in the Formula 1 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix due to appendicitis

The Ferrari Formula 1 team has announced that Spaniard Carlos Sainz, one of its two official drivers, will undergo surgery for appendicitis and will therefore miss the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, scheduled for Jeddah on Saturday 9 March. In his place, reserve driver Oliver Bearman, an eighteen-year-old Englishman who usually drives in Formula 2, a minor championship, but who had driven in Formula 1 in 2023 during some tests, will race.

Due to abdominal pain, Sainz had missed some scheduled media engagements in Jeddah, but still managed to take part in the first two free practice sessions on Thursday. Ferrari has not clarified how long they will have to do without him, who in the first race of 2024, in Bahrain, had finished third: behind the two Red Bulls and ahead of his teammate Charles Leclerc. The current championship will be Sainz’s last with Ferrari, which from next year will have Lewis Hamilton as its driver together with Leclerc.
