Fernández Vara says goodbye as general secretary of the PSOE of Extremadura

The former Extremaduran president assures that “one cannot say goodbye to his family” but rather “steps away and takes another place”

Guillermo Fernández Vara claims it is “lucky” to have been able to serve in the PSOE and to have presided over Extremadura

The former leader calls on his successor, Miguel Ángel Gallardo, to make the “unity” of the PSOE his “great strength”

The former general secretary of the PSOE of Extremadura Guillermo Fernández Vara has passed relief from his position to Miguel Angel Gallardo this Saturday in Mérida, in a speech where he claimed it was “lucky” to have been able to serve in the military and be president of the Board with a party that has allowed him to “fight for just causes” during the main years of his life, according to reports Marta Manchón.

Fernández Vara spoke in this way during his participation in the inauguration of the 14th Regional Congress of the PSOE of Extremadurain which Miguel Ángel Gallardo has been ratified as the new regional secretary of the party, in an act that included the general secretary of the PSOE and president of the Government, Pedro Sánchez.

Grateful to his colleagues

In his speech, after ensuring that “You can’t say goodbye to your family” but rather “steps away and occupies another place”, the former socialist leader has assured that he does not want “streets, squares, or medals”, since “the greatest tribute”, for him, is knowing that his photo is present in some of the homes of Extremadurans.

“Don’t propose me at all, I don’t want streets, I don’t want squares, I don’t want awards, I don’t want tributes, I don’t want medals, because I already have them. Do you know what my squares, my streets, my tributes and my medals are? The photos in the house of the Extremadurans,” he told his party colleagues.

In this sense, Fernández Vara, who has defined himself as a “political heir” of the former president of the Board Juan Carlos Rodríguez Ibarrahas defined as “privileges” having been president of the regional Executive, as well as having been part of the Federal Executive of the PSOE.

After having thanked those who, for years, have been his companions “in the trenches”, they have trusted him and have accompanied him, as is the case of Ibarra himself or former councilor Ramón Ropero, Fernández Vara has highlighted the management of his training at the head of the regional Executive in reducing the rate of early school leaving and building “small” hospitals close to population centers.

However, he has also stressed the importance, when it comes to face pending challenges in the region, to “really understand” what the “root of the problem” is, avoiding remaining “in the anecdote” and using it to “take down the adversary.”

Stop looking at Madrid

On the other hand, the former president of Extremadura has urged abandon that “pessimistic and dark” vision where the discourse that “Madrid is to blame for everything” prevails, a dynamic to which, he has warned, has returned and is “older than the black thread.”

Returning to it “40 years later” embodies, for Fernández Vara, an idea that “everything depends only on what others are willing to do for us”, something would represent an “enormous inability to be able to face the future with sufficiency”, as well as an “absolute absence of hope” in the region’s own capabilities and possibilities.

“The only way to look to the future with hope and enthusiasm is knowing that in that future we are going to fundamentally depend on what we are going to be able to do for ourselves,” he insisted.

Fernández Vara has also addressed his successor in office, Miguel Ángel Gallardo, to inform him that he will be able to count on him for everything he needs and ask him to make the PSOE “unity” his “great strength”, since, for him, “the best PSOE has been, throughout, the united PSOE.”

After defining “today” as a “gift” that, for that same reason, is called “present”, the former president of the Board has called to live, fight, suffer, enjoy and work “today” to “make it possible for others to whom life has not treated well to have a dignified and fair life.”

“Only for that reason will everything that our work and our efforts as an organization and as a party mean and represent be worth it,” he concluded.
