Fenerbahçe Contemplates Leaving Turkish Super Lig for European Championships

Fenerbahçe is reportedly eyeing five European championships to join including Ligue 1 after the violence suffered by its players last week which pushed the club’s leaders to threaten to leave the Turkish Super Lig.

Fenerbahçe could well make good on its threats to leave the Turkish championship. According to Turkish journalist Ertem Sener, the Istanbul club is still determined to change competition and would target five European championships: Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, France and Italy. Nothing filters on the feasibility of such a project, nor the progress of the reflection. But this highlights the fed up of the club’s leaders eight days after the scenes of surreal violence which broke out at the end of the meeting on the Trabzonspor field.

Resentment nurtured over several years

Already targeted by projectiles during the match, the players were attacked by local supporters at the final whistle, giving rise to scenes of chaos. Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic was hit while Michy Batshuayi and Bright Osayi-Samuel hit fans in defense. A few days later, Fenerbahçe, scalded by the lack of concrete measures from Turkish football authorities, threatened to leave the championship, which the club has won 19 times.

Several precedents would have contributed to accentuate the frustration of the Turkish club such as the title match lost against Denizlispor on the last day of the 2005-06 season, the Turkish match-fixing scandal of 2011 which had earned a six-year prison sentence from club president Aziz Yildirim and the ban from participating in the Champions League the following season, plus two more seasons. However, Yildirim’s conviction was overturned in 2020 while the club was cleared of any wrongdoing in 2015.

The 2015 bus attack, riddled with bullets after a 5-1 victory against Rizespor, was another traumatic event which added to the club’s heavy resentment. “The treatment Fenerbahçe receives is not something we can tolerate,” club president Ali Koc said last week.
