Fencing: Cadet and Youth World Championships. The Azzurri called up for Riyadh

After the sweep of the Olympic qualification, space for the world championship event for Under 17 and 20 ROME (ITALPRESS) – After the sweep of the Olympic qualification, with six out of six teams having obtained the pass for the Paris Games, fencing Italian is ready for the Cadet and Youth World Championships “Riyadh 2024”. From 12 to 20 April in Saudi Arabia the best Italian youth will attack the world championship event in which, over the nine days of competition, 18 world titles will be up for grabs, individual and team titles for the Under 20s and only individual titles for the Under 17s. The technical commissioners Stefano Cerioni for the foil, Dario Chiadò for the épée and Nicola Zanotti for the saber have made their calls official in line with the continuity with the excellent results obtained in the recent European Youth Championship held in Naples, with double victories in the medal table for both Under 17 than Under 20. Few changes were made compared to the continental expedition, one of which was “forced” due to the injury that stopped the foil player Matteo Iacomoni, the reigning Under 20 European champion, replaced by Marco Panazzolo, the only “cadet” who will be called to commitment both in his category (Under 17) and in the higher one. This outlines the patrol of 41 Italian players who will take to the stage in Riyadh, who will be joined – in advance warning – by 12 reserves in Italy (one for each specialty). In the Cadet category foil, Mariavittoria Berretta (Frascati Scherma), Maria Elisa Fattori (Club Scherma Jesi) and Ludovica Franzoni (Club Scherma Roma) will respond to the call for the girls’ competition, while Mattia Conticini (US Pisascherma), Emanuele Iaquinta (Frascati Scherma) and Marco Panazzolo (Comini Padova) will make up the men’s trio. For the Under 17 women’s epee, Silvia Liberati (Terni Fencing Club), Maria Chiara Testa (Forlivese Fencing Club) and Maria Roberta Casale (CUS Catania) have been chosen.

In the men’s category, the European category champion swordsman Michele Queiroli (Mangiarotti Milano), Ettore Leporati (Pro Vercelli) and Federico Varone (Pentamodena) will take to the stage. In the sabre, the cadets called up are the European champion Vittoria Mocci (Accademia Musumeci Greco Roma), Francesca Romana Lentini (Club Scherma Roma) and Benedetta Stangoni (Accademia Musumeci Greco Roma). Among the boys, the under 17 sabers Leonardo Reale (Frascati Scherma), continental gold medalist a month ago, his brother Valerio Reale (Frascati Scherma) and Massimo Sibillo (Milleculure Napoli) will represent Italy. The six cadets indicated as reserves are Vittoria Riva (Scherma Mogliano) and Elia Pasin (Scherma Treviso M° Geslao) in foil, Ludovica Costantini (Club Scherma Foligno) and Federico Bondi (Scherma Treviso M° Geslao) in épée, Diletta Fusetti (Petrarca Padova) and Christian Murtas (Club Scherma Roma) in sabre. Double commitment, both individual and team, for the Youth category where 22 athletes out of 24 who had represented Italy in the recent European Championship were confirmed. In the women’s foil the chosen ones are Irene Bertini (CS Carabinieri), Greta Collini (Comini Padova), Matilde Molinari (Fiamme Gialle) and Vittoria Pinna (CS Pisa Antonio Di Ciolo), while in the men’s events it will be the foilists’ turn Mattia De Cristofaro (CS Carabinieri), Federico Greganti (Club Scherma Jesi), Gregorio Isolani (Fides Livorno) and cadet Marco Panazzolo (Comini Padova) who will therefore also be competing among the Under 20s as a “novelty” compared to the quartet that triumphed in Naples. In the Youth women’s épée, Anita Corradino (Cesare Pompilio Genova), Eleonora Orso (Pro Vercelli), Vittoria Siletti (Fiamme Azzurre) and the new entry Allegra Cristofoletto (Scherma Treviso M° Geslao) are called up; among the swordsmen there will be the European team champions Nicolò Del Contrasto (Società del Giardino Milano), Matteo Galassi (CS Carabinieri), Fabio Mastromarino (Scherma Pistoia 1894) and Jacopo Rizzi (Scherma Bergamo). Finally the sabre: for women’s competitions Alessandra Nicolai (CS Carabinieri), Maria Clementina Polli (CS Carabinieri), Manuela Spica (Fiamme Gialle) and Mariella Viale (Fiamme Oro) will respond to the call, while for the men’s competitions the Italian sabers will be Edoardo Cantini (CS Carabinieri), Francesco Pagano (Fiamme Gialle), Edoardo Reale (Frascati Scherma, third brother of the expedition) and Marco Stigliano (Fiamme Gialle). For the Under 20 category the six reserves in Italy will be Letizia Gabola (CH4 Sporting Torino) and Gian Maria Antonini (CS Pisa Antonio Di Ciolo) in foil, Benedetta Madrignani (Circolo Scherma La Spezia) and Cristiano Sena (Fiamme Oro) in épée, Gaia Carafa (CS Carabinieri) and Davide Cicchetti (Dauno Foggia) in the sabre. With the president of the Italian Fencing Federation, Paolo Azzi, in Riyadh the head of the Italian delegation will be the deputy vice-president Maurizio Randazzo. The accompanying technical staff will be guided by their respective weapons managers: for the foil, with coach Stefano Cerioni, there will be the masters Fabrizio Villa, Francesca Bortolozzi and Giuseppe Pierucci; for the sword, alongside the Technical Commissioner Dario Chiadò, the masters Paolo Zanobini, Adalberto Tassinari and Francesco Leonardi; for the saber, with the coach Nicola Zanotti, present the masters Luigi Miracco, Sorin Radoi and Fabio Di Lauro. The Cadet and Youth World Championships “Riyadh 2024” will unfold over nine days, three consecutive for each weapon: foil will open from 12 to 14 April; followed – from the 15th to the 17th – by the triptych of days dedicated to the sword; finally the stage saber from 18 to 20 April. The program will be marked by the same sequence: first the Under 20 individual competitions, the following day the Under 17 individual competitions and finally the Under 20 team trials. A year ago, in the last youth world championship held in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, the Italy won seven medals (one gold, four silver and two bronze). Now, with a largely new but very ambitious delegation, the objective will be, as always, to try to improve. – Photo of Federscherma press office – (ITALPRESS). ari/com 26-Mar-24 12:00 .
