FC Twente Secures 1-0 Victory in Overijssel Derby Against Heracles Almelo

The Overijssel derby against Heracles Almelo became a prey for FC Twente with a 1-0 victory. Joseph Oosting’s team could not convince in a boring match, but came out on top thanks to a goal. Mario Engels came close to scoring a painful equalizer in the final phase, but rammed the ball against the post.

FC Twente was in the news several times during the international break due to the situation surrounding right back Joshua Brenet. He was sentenced to one month in prison for driving twice without a driver’s license, after which FC Twente ultimately decided to terminate his contract. Alfons Sampsted was therefore in the starting line-up, while Sem Steijn was also allowed to start again. The Almelo team lacked a dangerous attacker, as Emil Hansson was absent for unknown reasons.

He would not have been featured much in the first phase of the match, because it was one-way traffic towards Michael Brouwer’s goal. Twente was active in the initial phase and easily reached the flanks, as evidenced by the large number of corners (7!) from deflected crosses in the first twenty minutes. The biggest opportunity came from a corner from Sem Steijn: his effort almost flew in untouched. However, due to the necessary inaccuracies in the passing and large crowds in the black and white penalty area, that was also the only chance for the Tukkers.

On the other hand, Heracles bar showed little, but thanks to a handy fumble shot from Jordy Bruijn, the possibilities were level after half an hour. Due to a low tempo and an increasing number of incorrect passes, Erwin van der Looi’s team hardly encountered any problems, although Myron Boadu fired a nice shot after a good action by winger Ricky van Wolfswinkel. Furthermore, the 35-year-old player was mainly present in a negative way, as he committed two clumsy fouls and also received a yellow card for that. He thus tried to stop the growing offensive ambitions of the visitors, although there was no Heracles threat yet.

The last dangerous moment in the first half came from FC Twente, as Robin Pröpper’s long shot flew narrowly wide. After the break, the Tukkers slowly increased the pressure. Daan Rots was dangerous after a handy solo, after which Heracles did not get the ball from their own half. After a long combination, the ball arrived with some fortune at the feet of Boadu, who fired the ball convincingly into the far corner and opened the score. Shortly afterwards, Boadu had to leave the field with hamstring complaints. Heracles had not left a mark, but after a switch from Jizz Hornkamp, Bryan Limbombe’s attempt was easily stopped.

Heracles tried to create opportunities again after the opening goal, but was hardly successful. Twente also achieved little. The second half, just like the first act, was full of poor passes, abysmal actions and unnecessary fouls. It was an unspectacular Overijssel derby in which more went wrong than succeeded. As time went on, the home team’s pressure increased and a few shots were fired, but Michal Sadilek and Michel Vlap’s attempts did not end up between the posts. Both teams showed some nice actions in the remainder of the match, which posed a certain threat. However, there were hardly any chances until Engels rammed the ball into the post in the final phase. However, it remained 1-0 for FC Twente.
