The second leg against Lazio Rome is groundbreaking for FC Bayern and Thomas Tuchel. If the club were to part ways with the coach before the end of the season, Lothar Matthäus would have a solution. Christoph Daum is enthusiastic about the idea.

The situation surrounding Thomas Tuchel is becoming more and more acute. Should FC Bayern be eliminated in the second leg of the Champions League round of 16 against Lazio Rome on Tuesday (9 p.m., Amazon Prime, first leg 0-1), the German record champions could part ways with the 50-year-old before the summer. Tuchel’s contract is valid until June 30, 2025, but he will leave the club after the current one at the latest, the club management recently agreed on this with him.

Lothar Matthäus now brings a possible interim solution into play. And suggests club legend Hermann Gerland as a possible interim coach in the event of an imminent separation from Tuchel. The 69-year-old Gerland is a “people catcher” and knows “what makes Bayern Munich tick,” said the record national player on Sky: “What is he doing? It’s supposed to bring the team together as a unit because they can play football.”

Gerland worked at FC Bayern from 1990 to 1995 and from 2001 to 2021 and held several coaching positions at the club; the Bochum native was assistant to the respective head coaches for many years.

Former Bundesliga coach Christoph Daum (including Bayer Leverkusen) described the idea as a “huge suggestion” from Matthäus and also raved about Bayern’s long-time assistant and junior coach: “He has all the qualities a Bayern coach needs. “

Tuchel will probably not be retained until the end of the season, said Matthäus. “The risk is great. They don’t understand each other, and if you don’t understand each other, you’re no longer there for each other.”

Daum misses working together

Matthäus criticized Tuchel’s behavior since the announcement of the early separation at the end of the season. The 62-year-old said that after weak games like last Friday at SC Freiburg (2:2), he would “always point the finger at the team”: “He belittles the players, but tries not to make mistakes in himself Tuchel is making “many ditches” for himself.

Daum generally misses cohesion at Bayern. “There is no unity at all anymore,” said the 70-year-old. “To me it gives the impression of a patchwork family where something has been put together, which sometimes seems more accidental to me.”

Hermann Gerland most recently worked in various positions at the German Football Association (DFB), and during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar he was part of the coaching team of then national coach Hansi Flick. Gerland has a close relationship with many Bayern players such as Thomas Müller and Manuel Neuer.
