FC Bayern Pursuing Chelsea’s Ian Maatsen as Potential Replacement for Alphonso Davies

FC Bayern has had to deal with the departure of left-back Alphonso Davies for some time.

The 23-year-old Canadian is considering a transfer to Real Madrid. Meanwhile, in Munich they have not yet thrown in the towel and put a new contract offer on the table for the lightning-fast wing player.

However, the ideas regarding the salary question are still far apart. Neo-sports director Max Eberl recently spoke plainly and called for a quick decision in order to ensure planning security for the next season.

Dortmund loan player in focus

As long as Davies has not made a final decision, the Munich team will have to take a two-pronged approach and look for alternatives. One such team is currently playing at league rivals Borussia Dortmund. That player might be available next summer.

According to “Sky”, the German record champions are looking into signing Ian Maatsen, who is currently on loan from Chelsea to BVB. Since his arrival last winter, the 22-year-old Dutchman has made twelve appearances (one goal, two assists) in the black and yellow uniform. The technically skilled defender made a powerful impression and recommended himself for higher tasks.

“Bargain” thanks to the exit clause?

After the current season, he will initially return to his home club in London; Dortmund was unable to secure a purchase option. It is still unclear at this point whether Chelsea are still planning to continue with Maatsen.

According to reports, there is a €40 million exit clause in the Netherlands U21 international’s contract, which runs until 2026. A sum that wouldn’t pose too much of a challenge for the German league Croesus.

With Raphael Guerreiro and Frans Krätzig, who is currently on loan at Wiener Austria, FC Bayern at least has two more options up its sleeve.
