A lot of work awaits Max Eberl over the Easter holidays. FC Bayern’s sports director needs to find a new coach. Xabi Alonso’s commitment to Bayer Leverkusen makes his mission extremely difficult. Eberl is irritated by the excesses of the search.

The search for a coach at FC Bayern also concerns sports director Max Eberl on Easter Sunday. “I actually wrote to friends of mine: ‘You’re looking for eggs on Sunday and I’m looking for the trainer.’ The work continues,” said Eberl with a smile in an interview with the ZDF sports studio.

As before, he did not want to comment on the candidates reported in the media, such as national coach Julian Nagelsmann, immediately after the 2-0 defeat against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday evening. “We are really doing our job. And I know that everyone is interested, but it is not yet the point where you can say you can become more offensive,” said Eberl. “We check, we examine, we are clear about what we want and try to implement it.”

According to rumors, Nagelsmann, who had to leave FC Bayern in March 2023, is again among the candidates to succeed coach Thomas Tuchel, who is leaving FC Bayern after the season.

“Alonso’s decision not surprising”

Bayer Leverkusen’s successful coach Xabi Alonso, however, is out of the race after declaring that he wants to stay with the factory club for another season. “We’re checking on coaches, that’s what we’ve always said. That’s why Xabi’s public decision no longer came as a surprise to me,” said Eberl. “Accordingly, we have been traveling in other directions for a long time.”

When asked whether Bayern could possibly get into a conflict with the German Football Association (DFB) over Nagelsmann, Bayern’s sports director replied: “I think that Julian and his management know very well what he has on the table . I don’t know, so I can’t say anything about it.”

When asked whether the former Bayern coach and current national coach Julian Nagelsmann was a candidate, Eberl said: “I have never commented on a name and never discussed a name. I also read that Antonio Conte was sending me lists of players. I always see how perverse and strange our search for a coach is – who has agreed and canceled everything.”

Nagelsmann is contractually bound to the DFB as national coach until after the European Championships in Germany in the summer. The association would like to extend the contract before the major event. Nagelsmann also wants clarity before the tournament from June 14th to July 14th.

Roberto De Zerbi comments

Coach Roberto De Zerbi from the English club Brighton & Hove Albion, who is apparently also courted by Bayern, has not yet decided on his sporting future.

“I have a contract but I would like to speak to my club to understand their plans. Then we will make the decision together,” said the Italian, according to a BBC report, before the game at Liverpool this Sunday. The 44-year-old is also said to be a candidate for the “Reds” because coach Jürgen Klopp will be leaving the club in the summer.

De Zerbi, who has a contract until 2026, led Brighton to sixth place last season, and in the current season the club is in midfield in the Premier League table. “My relationship with the players and the fans – that can’t change in the future,” said De Zerbi.
