FC Bayern Legend Franz Roth Reflects on Historic 11-1 Victory Over BVB

This Friday, FC Bayern will be the first club to play its 2,000th Bundesliga game. He celebrated his biggest win in 1971 in an 11-1 win against Borussia Dortmund. Franz “Bulle” Roth (77) was there and remembers it.

How important is the 11:1 victory with FC Bayern over BVB to you, Mr. Roth?

I remember that it was our last season in the stadium on Grünwalder Straße, before moving to the Olympic Stadium. It was raining and the ground was deep. I scored twice with strong shots, Jürgen Rynio was in goal for BVB.

When did you realize it was going on that day?

At halftime it was already 4-0. Our team back then didn’t stop playing; that alone would have hindered Gerd Müller’s ambition. If it had been 20-0, Gerd would have wanted to score the 21st goal. How many did he make at 11:1?

Four, plus you twice, Uli Hoeneß twice, Franz Beckenbauer, Paul Breitner and Willi Hoffmann. Have you ever thought about showing mercy?

Bullshit, why should we have managed? Conversely, Dortmund would have given us eleven if they could. That has nothing to do with a lack of respect, the opponent just should have defended better. And there was no such thing as taking it easy with an eye on the next game. And with all the oxen tours by bus through the villages, we had more games than the current generation. Mostly with an articulated bus, in the back there were balls, jerseys and all the equipment.

Is 11:1 a Bayern record for eternity?

Everything would have to be right for them to beat that in the Bundesliga, so I don’t believe it. Ultimately, two things have to come together: an exceptional team here, a really bad opponent there. At most a team gets three or four sendings off in a game, then maybe it would be possible.

Does the game remain particularly memorable?

Yes, but also the 4:7 in Kaiserslautern after a 4:1 lead and of course all the victorious finals in the European Cup.

You were missing from FC Bayern’s heaviest Bundesliga defeat, 7-0 against Schalke, in 1976.

That wouldn’t have happened to me (laughs). We wouldn’t have lost that much. That was the first time I had problems with my Achilles tendon, which later tore. By the way, FC Bayern will never lose that much again.

You came to FC Bayern in 1966, a year after promotion to the Bundesliga. Could you have imagined your club’s success story back then?

No of course not. It started with us, we were really eleven friends, a close-knit team. It’s unique that FC Bayern has essentially always remained at the top and successful since then. A German championship is the most normal thing in the world for him these days, although perhaps not this season.
