FC Bayern lost their next points in Freiburg. The record champions showed a puzzling performance, especially in the first half. It’s not just the fans who are surprised. Coach Tuchel also wonders what he saw.

FC Bayern wanted to put at least a little pressure on Bayer Leverkusen in the fight for the championship. But this plan failed completely at SC Freiburg. It was only enough for a 2:2 (1:1) in Breisgau. It was a game that Bayern could have just as easily lost. But also win.

Lose because they showed such an undisputable performance in the first half hour that they were still well served with the score at 0:1 at that point. Bayern played wildly on defense, repeatedly moving up wide, offering huge spaces and defending standards rather apathetically. “We could have made it 2-0,” said Vincenzo Grifo from Freiburg, quite rightly.

Since the Breisgauers didn’t do this, the guests equalized, suddenly took control and could have decided the game for their part. The fact that it ended 2-2 was once again due to the defensive department, which simply didn’t take a throw-in into the penalty area seriously enough and benevolently accompanied the equalizer.

“The central defender overran the full-back”

Coach Thomas Tuchel, who will be leaving the club at the end of the season, seemed downright stunned when analyzing the first 30 minutes. “We didn’t play a good first half hour,” said Tuchel on DAZN and then went into detail.

It would have been quicker to list what his players did right during this phase. But the coach decided to take the opposite approach: “We played completely without structure, far too undisciplined. We invited the counterattack and had no control at all. This was partly hara-kiri, mindless. We did things that we had never trained or discussed before, where the central defender ran over the full-back. We played early like it was the 85th minute and we’re 1-0 down.”

Later, especially after the substitution, the game completely turned around. His team was dominant, created a number of chances and justifiably took the lead. Tuchel: “And then we lost our wages. But perhaps the difference between the first half hour and the time after was too blatant to win here.”

Final word from Jamal Musiala, who scored the remarkable 2-1 for Bayern: “It’s really annoying how things are going right now.”
